Postby MentholMoose » 03 Dec 2013, 17:58

So did anyone buy an Xbox One yet? It's currently available at Amazon.com.

I was considering buying one but the launch titles are not enough to convince me. Forza 5 looks good but an Xbox One, game, and wheel controller is just way too much, especially considering I already have a wheel compatible with PC and PS3 and GT6 is coming out soon.

I pre-ordered one through amazon and had it delivered on launch day...

so far for games I've got
-Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag
-Dead Rising 3
-Forza Mortorsport 5
-Killer Instinct (the new one)
-Killer Instinct Classic (perfect emulated version of the original arcade game)

Here are my thoughts on it so far:

Positives: Graphics are fantastic, the new Controller is amazing, the new kinect sensor works a lot better, and you can navigate anywhere fairly easily via voice. They also let you essentially freeze any game and go do something else/play another game, then come back to your original games, which is really cool. Boot up is also crazy fast, It's already in the menu and waiting before my projector has even finished booting up. You can also "snap" apps to the side of the game screen which is a little clumsy at first but once you get the hang of it I've found it super useful (you can snap pretty much any app to the side, this includes a web-browser, the game DVR app, part chat information, TV pass-through, netflix, skype etc.)

Negatives: all games need to be installed and installations can take literally hours, the dashboard/menu interface looks nice but is on a whole a lot less functional than the 360's dashboard... the guide is gone completely too, instead you just go back to the dashboard when you want to do something that you would have normally used the guide for. Also there area few features that I loved about the 360, such as custom game soundtracks and setting default controls in your profile that they got rid of on the One which sucks.

Stuff I haven't tried yet: there's lots of integration with cable/sat boxes allowing for DVR like control and voice control, I'm not setup for that, there is also skype integration and better integration with netflix... I don't have accounts with any of those services. Finally they now have "Game DVR" where you can record your gameplay right on the console, I haven't tried that out yet at all (though a few achievements notified me that they automatically recorded something for me.

As for the games:
Killer Instinct is awesome and is using up most of my time. There are only 6 playable characters so far but supposidly they'll be releasing new character and features on a regular basis. The training mode is also the best in any fighting game I've ever played it actually teaches you all the nuances and mechanics of a 2D fighter. I bought the Pin Ultimate edition which comes with an emulated version of the classic KI1 arcade game which is great.

Forza 5. the Drivatars are a really cool feature and it works exceptionally well, graphics are fantastic (basically Forza 4's vista mode quality for the entire game), but the rest of the game seems not nearly as good as older Forzas, it's missing a lot of game modes and features, the car and track lists are smaller and it's clear they designed the game to encourage you to pay extra money to get ahead which is BS. Forza 5 does make great use of the new "impulse triggers" on the XB1's controller (they're basically force feedback triggers if you haven't heard of them), it's really quite amazing my brake and accell control improved immediately because you can actually get feedback through the controller that lets you know how much grip you've got and how close you are to the breaking point. It's the first time I've ever got that sensation outside of driving a real car.

AC4 - It's the same as the 360 version but with much better graphics.

Dead Rising 3 - The game is really fun and entertaining, it's astounding how many zombies they are able to have on screen at once. If you've played Dead Rising 2 then you know what to expect They really expanded on a lot of the concepts from DR2 and it works pretty well now. Next to KI this is getting most of my play time. My only complaints here as that the controls are a little sensitive and the lighting can be a little harsh (night time and unlit buildings are unforgivingly dark).

Ryse Son of Rome - I haven't bough this yet, I thought it looked dumb from what I saw before launch (and the fact that it was originally supposed to be a Kinect game really put me off) but the few people on my friend's list who bought it seem to love it and speak highly of it, the graphics on this game are apparently the best out of all the launch titles so I might try to pick it up after x-mas cheap.

I'm not much of an FPS fan so I haven't picked up any of those.

Final Thoughts:
--> The new controller is my new favorite controller of all time
--> The Dashboard feels like they just threw out everything from the 360 and started from scratch and still has a ways to go before it works as well as the 360's dashboard/guide did.
--> I don't really care about the dashboard because I'm having tons of fun with KI and DR3, those two games alone made it worth the purchase for me. (FM5 on the other hand seems like a substantial step down from FM4 with the exception of graphics and opponent AI)

Full Disclosure: I had a PS4 pre-ordered too (I actually was planning on boycotting the XB1 until they dropped the DRM Requirement), I canceled the PS4 pre-order a week before launch because there were literally no exclusive at launch that interested me. As I said, I'm not a FPS fan so Killzone was uninteresting and I had a chance to play Knack a at the GameStop Expo a while ago and that seemed like a less interesting version of Kameo. I usually buy all my consoles at launch but this time I really couldn't justify it. I'll probably pickup a PS4 this time next year once there are some games on the platform that I'm actually interested in playing.

Instead of buying a brand new joystick, there are adapters which allow the use of 360, PS3, PS4, and keyboard/mouse on the Xbox One.

http://www.amazon.com/Cross-over-Xbox-360-Playstation-3-Windows/dp/B008US4PBY/ref=pd_rhf_se_p_d_4

Currently sold out on Amazon. When I last checked, it was only $40.
