What are you playing?

Post by MentholMoose »

Hey people, I was wondering what you are playing (besides VOOT, of course :) ). Also is there anything you are looking forward to?

I'm not playing anything right now, I'm actually studying for MCSE exams. Yeah, work-related stuff is eating my time.

I really want to get back into racing sims, though. I bought a new wheel (Fanatec GT3 RS) to replace my aging Logitech DFP, and when I have some time I'm gonna setup my gaming PC (it's been mid-upgrade for a while) to play some sims. Also GT5 is coming out soon, so I might pick up a PS3 for that (sigh, another console for one game).

I've been pretty obsessed with VOOM again lately. I've also been playing Raiden IV and Raiden Fighters Aces pretty obsessively. The Mr. Driller series has also commanded my attention lately.

I need to get back to playing Soul Calibur IV again, though.

I used to play on Dreamcast a lot, before buying my Xbox 360.
I'm a huge fan of what SEGA made until they stopped Hardware, I was a Sonic Fan (Master System, genesis, Dreamcast). I discovered VOOT because of the "toy-capsules" present in Shenmue 2.

On Xbox I play very "mainstream" games: Assassin's Creed, Gears of War, Left 4 Dead, Super Street Fighter 4, Tomb Raider etc. These games are really interesting and entertaining the first time you play them, then you replay them to get some new achievements, then you start playing online (if possible).

I'm also fond of Shoot'em Ups. I played a lot on Dreamcast (Ikaruga, under Defeat, Psyvariar 2, Triggerheart Exelicca), then I played these games and descovered others on XBLA (geometry Wars, and some other very good Indie Games).

Now, I play Shmups on my PC using MAME (GigaWing, DoDonPachi, Cybattler, Progear, Blazing Star, Dangun Feveron etc). I also play some Arcade classics like Pac-Man, Tetris, Puzzle Bubble, Metal Slug, Street Fighter 3.3 etc). I could play these games day long, they never die.

Yesterday, I downloaded, TouHou Project, these games will drive me insane.

I regularly update what Im playing, comments on games etc. here: http://backloggery.com/zaarock

Dunno what Ill play next, might do a Bionic Commando: Rearmed Hard mode run before the sequel comes out. Starting to play some Rondo of Blood too.

Will be playing ESPGaluda 2 every once in a while, I like the game a lot compared to other cave shmups. Always playing a bit of VOOT as usual :p

I regret not joining the annual shmups forum tournament, first week and its already one of my favorites, Cyvern :( Have to study for exams though so its probably for the best.

Fredo: good to know more people know of Cybattler :) btw, there are some online play based MAME clients like supercade.. had some fun times playing the metal slug series and shock troopers on that. Twinklestar Sprites is probably sweet too but havent played it with anyone online yet.

I play VOOT more often than any other game by far, but the other games I play are Red Dead Redemption, Transformers: WFC, and Blur. I was playing Street Fighter 4 for a while but that's one of those games that you can only be good at if you were playing it while still in diapers, apparently, so I quit.

Looking forward to HAWX 2 (coming soon), Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Twisted Metal (a PS3 exclusive) and Mortal Kombat. Especially Twisted Metal and Mortal Kombat, which are two series I've been extra loyal to throughout my life. As you can see, I prefer fighting and vehicular combat games pretty much across the board.

I may give GT5 a try, but I sunk way too many hours into GT4, and regretted it dearly. Racing sims require too much patience, because not only do you have to memorize the tracks, you have to know how to race them with lots of different cars (and in GT5, there are a lot of cars), so I don't think I will want to do that again. Too much memorization, not enough creativity.

As far as Soul Calibur IV, I strangely felt like buying it last week when I saw that it was a download-on-demand game for $20. Before investing money and time into any game, I like to read the forums for that game just to make sure that the majority of people don't think it's broken, and I was discouraged by the balancing issues there (looking at you, Hilde). But I'd be interested in learning SC4 as long as it's fun and there aren't too many issues. What do you think, MasterFygar? Do you recommend it?

I'll consider getting SC4 if you are getting it, Phantom. Anyways...

Still mainly playing VOOT. Cross-cultural parties are really livening things up, at least for those who still shows up.

Learning how to play Mushihime-sama Futanari right now. Been trying to get the Score 100,000,000 in Original Mode achievement and one-coin playthrough thing in one go, but I always get hit around stage 3. Maybe I should give in and finally start chucking bombs or something... Gah I was never that good at shmups with the exception of Castle of Shikigami 2.

I'm going back to Bayonetta regularly because I can learn something new about the combo system every time I play even after clocking in 100+ hours. Occasionally I'll be playing Ninja Gaiden 2 if I am in the mood for an action/3rd person shooter/bomberman/dodge ball hybrid.

I'm also finishing up on some JRPG - Resonance of Fate and Vesperia. Fun games, but doesn't beat the godly amazing Nier.

Also playing eroge Jinkai Makyo right now. Don't you dare ask me what an eroge is.

As for future games on my radar:

Assassin's Creed Brohood - stupid sexy Ezio

Castlevania - whipping people

Catherine - Atlus, Shin Megami Tensei, funky hiphop sheep, porno music...

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Iffy on this one because of all the flashy 3rd person take-down cutscenes or whatever they are called. That and Square-Enix is not something I am too fond of...

Halo Reach - would consider getting it if the campaign is fun and if you guys want to play co-op. If I end up hating the game I could still sell it for a high enough price anyways, unlike a certain RPG that is plummeting in used price not long after release...

Force - loli VR

Portal 2 - cake, lie, etc

Metal Gear Solid: Rising - watermelons

And where is my goddamn ZOE3!?

I also want to play some VOOT, especially after all those posts last week about several people playing all night! :D I've been staying away since I've been studying a lot, and because I need to clean my Twin Sticks. I can feel that they need lubrication so I don't want to risk damaging them, but it is a time-consuming project to clean arcade Twin Sticks.

Well, I'll tell you right now- getting the hang of the most complicated moves is a nightmare. I know startlingly few compared to my love for the game and the in game commands make little sense once you get to page 4 or 5 of the more complicated inputs. However, if you aren't concerned with being able to do the sit-my-crotch-on-your-face fanservice moves, it's really easy to pick up and an excellent game. The game is far from broken, but several characters are, in a tournament setting, generally impossible to win with... including my main, Seong Mi-na. The thing is, at a tourney level, there are going to be some characters who have two frames less cool down time than every move of another if inputted directly after a down throw soul crush and bla bla bla but if you just play for fun like I do, there is little issue at all. In fact, until you get to a frame-rate combo battle, some of the lower tier characters are uber-- my friends all hate me because of a combo I use as Seong Mi-na that makes it impossible to move, it's dodgable by a good player with an exact split second type of guard but none of us care enough to go into such detail  Really, it's an incredibly fun game, and unless you want to make money from it, I can't recommend it enough. It's INCREDIBLY fun with friends or players who don't have folders full of frame data, and you'll really only run into trouble if you run into one of the few "anikings" of the game ;) I honestly prefer SCII arcade over any other games in the series or ports because the atmosphere is, in my opinion, better, and I prefer the character designs and animations, but there is no doubt that SCIV is the best game in the series in every way gameplay wise. I can't even explain how much fun I had the first day I got the game when I had about eight friends over and we took turns making characters and ripping them (and their clothes!) up, heheh. Definitely get it, it's like Tekken minus the juggling. There are so many moves even just using a single button and different directions that one can have an intense fight just using kicks!

And you mentioned the forums of the game... I would advise against it. They love it, but they also mock users of half of the characters that are lower on one of their twenty conflicting tier lists and obsess over complicated numerical codes for each move and how many fractions of a second Mitsurigi can grab a good Nightmare player out of a failed P+K+K combo. In normal play, there are no glaring flaws, and I see the better players of my friends win consistently as any character based on their skill, not balance issues. It's really all about mindgames, and there's nothing lacking in that department.

EDIT: MM, I feel your pain on the twinsticks. I'm consistently having to battle with my VOOM sticks to keep them doing their best- it seems like it's either too much effort to get one to move fast enough or so much lube they connect when you barely touch it and it messes up your game. I've got them pretty good right now but it was a nightmare to get them there.

Back on topic here...

While I've obviously been playing VOOT quite often, there's a few other games I'm playing right now.

After some months of not playing, I've been getting back into Super Robot Wars Alpha 3. So far, I'm about 4 missions in.

Also, my Gameboy Color games have been getting some more attention, Game & Watch Gallery 3 especially. I'm still trying to get all the stars.

Lastly, I'm going through Glover and Donkey 64 on the N64. Both are good 3D platformers, and I'd definately recommend both of them if you haven't played them already.

Otherwise, my time has been occupied by both school and building this(I'll be sure to post progress pics tommorow).

Wouldn't it be nice to come home from work and play some VOOT? I think so, but usually there's nobody playing at that time. So instead, I usually play Catan or Magic: The Gathering to wind down after work. Anybody on my friends list already knows this, though.

Catan:
When I downloaded Catan, I thought "eh, this might be alright." I only got it based on reviews and recommendations. I had never played the game before, I generally don't play board games, and it seemed odd to use this console that was supposed to be a shmup machine to play a board game. But here I am, still playing it regularly over a year later. Simple and addictive.

Magic The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers:
I could write a ridiculously long essay about this, but I'll try to keep it short. The XBLA version of Magic is basically a marketing tool to get new players into the game, enticing them to move on to paper Magic or Magic The Gathering Online (i.e., give all their money to Wizards of the Coast). Pretty brilliant, actually.

The gameplay is just like the card game, but they watered down the game by only allowing you to use pre-constructed decks (there are a dozen or so), and you can only modify those decks to a certain extent. They say they did this to prevent experienced players from destroying the n00bs, but really it's to artificially limit the game so that people don't just settle for this and not blow all their money on "real" Magic.

I forgot how much I liked this game (I used to play way back in '94/'95), but I like not being broke, so I'm sticking with the XBLA version for now. Climbing the leaderboards my current obsession.

Tetris Splash:
The Tetris The Grand Master games are better than this, but this has an active online community on XBL, so this is what I play. There are some crazy good players; check out some of the Round 3 videos here: http://www.youtube.com/user/TSpinWeekly

Not Tetris Splash, but here's good demo of how good people get at Tetris (I think this is one of the Tetris Splash regulars, I forget his Gamertag, though):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=va21OTQt ... re=related

STGT '10 (Shooting Game Tournament 2010)
Shmups Forum has been having these since '06. The format has changed a little over the years, but the basic principle is the same: a shmup gets picked, you get one week to get the highest score you can, repeat for 5 or 6 weeks. Both individual and team points are awarded at the end of every week. The competition is pretty intense.

It can be fun, but inevitably you get stuck playing some games you don't really like, but you sink tons of time into it to keep your ranking up. Normally I try to play every week, but this year I told my team I'll play very little, if at all.

Speaking of shmups, looks like we have a few shmup fans here.
MasterFygar wrote:I've also been playing Raiden IV and Raiden Fighters Aces pretty obsessively.
I only played Raiden IV once or twice, but it seemed alright. I really liked Raiden Fighters Jet until I started playing it for score; now I can't stand it.
MasterFygar wrote:The Mr. Driller series has also commanded my attention lately.
As it should. I've been neglecting that game ever since I stuffed my Dreamcast away in the closet. I never could quite get to the end. I've also been meaning to pick up the DS version.
Fredo wrote:Dangun Feveron
Good man. :) It'll be sweet when this comes out for Xbox (presumably XBLA). Leaderboards are much more gratifying than posting a score to a message board.
Zaarock wrote:Will be playing ESPGaluda 2 every once in a while, I like the game a lot compared to other cave shmups.
Honestly it's one of my least favorite Cave games. The scoring system just doesn't click with me; for Xbox360 Cave games I'd much rather go with Futari or Ketsui.
Zaarock wrote:Twinklestar Sprites is probably sweet too but havent played it with anyone online yet.
I've never played it online, but it is a really fun game.

Also, I'm surprised by two things:
1. Zaarock's post didn't just say "Castlevania"
2. He had enough time to post despite playing Castlevania :P

My close friend tried to convince me to buy MTG just recently. And it was the lack of a full deck editor that convinced me not to buy it. I thought that this omission was inexcusable, but now that you mention this, it makes sense from a marketing perspective. Glad I didn't fall for that one. And plus, Yu-Gi-Oh for XBLA is on the way, and it doesn't look like Konami will make the same mistake.

Back to SC4. I think I'm going to get the game, but I'll definitely be more likely to play it if I can find a good tutor who can help me learn. Fygar, would you be willing, or do you know someone else who is?

And Shamanic, if you copy my character and playstyle again, I will be sure to make you pay! :)

Hey, I'd happy to help you. I may not be the best there is but after playing with a few other "hardcore fans" and wiping the floor with them, I think I might be good enough to at least get you to an intermediate level. I don't really know anyone else to suggest, either, as I'm the best among my friends and know none of the can-win-without-getting-hit tourney players, so I guess you'll just have to settle for me

I like the system more than futari 1.5 / BL original at least, should play BL maniac more as its probably my favorite. I like galuda 2:s difficulty curve and the risky scoring system keeps you on the edge once survival has gotten easy. I dont like how much "slowdown" you get in futari, here the speed feels stable and you manipulate it yourself. Almost made it to Stage 5 boss so far, the game gets serious on that stage :)

..and yeah, I dont have access to ketsui and the other region locked titles. Guwange and Dangun Feveron XBLA will be fun times though. Still wish there could be a raizing collection on the 360 though :(

Oh yeah, if anyone needs help in Castlevania HoD I can join. I'm pretty much done with the game until DLC comes out but it's still fun. Surprised the game was good enough to keep me playing for 3 weeks already.

I don't think I'll buy Guwange on XBLA, I loved the Medieval Japan universe, but the scrolling is a bit too wierd for me.

I may buy Dangun Feveron, but I already play it on my PC and I don't want some new 3D-HD graphics, I love those awesome pixelised graphics. If the graphics are not improved (or if it has a 3D-2D switch like R-Tpe Dimension) I may consider buying it for leaderboards.

In fact, I'd prefer Cave to make there NEW shmups Region Free instead of releasing there old ones on XBLA. And I'd prefer DoDonPachi or ProGear instead of Guwange or Dangun Feveron. But maybe it'll happen soon.

I think Capcom owns the rights to Progear, so it wouldn't be up to Cave to release that. Dodonpachi would actually make a lot of sense on XBLA, moreso than Dangun Feveron (even though I like Feveron a lot more).

As for region locking, IIRC it's more complicated than one would think. I forget the details, but to make it region free you have to submit the game for review for all the various regions or something. I think Cave mentioned that it might not be worth the hassle given how few additional sales would result from a region free release (small overseas fanbase, and a lot of them have Japanese 360s anyway).

Vanquish demo is a BLAST. Aside from that, just getting back into VOOT. Hoped Scott Pilgrim would be more like River City Ransom, but was sadly mistaken. Just really looking forward to Fallout Vegas and Fable 3 now.

Blazblue Continuum Shift and Super Street Fighter IV. That's basically it, until GT5 comes out. :]
