Cake Pan Twin Sticks!

Post by carr76013 »

This is a pic of some home made twin sticks I made using a baking pan, some NES Quickshot Joysticks, and a 3rd party Saturn pad.

I made a Saturn pad so I could also use them for Dreamcast (Total Control 3).

Next step will be to find a way to make them compatible with Xbox so I can use em for VO on all 3 systems!

Oh awesome! You actually took my advice and posted your cake pan sticks here!

Those are absolutely epic. Thanks for sharing.

The blue piping really gives them that extra accent that makes them super stylish.

Do they actually work? ;)

Do you have any pics of the bottom or anything showing the construction? This is a much much better option than butchering my Saturn sticks. The sticks look sufficiently large & comfy.

Those are awesome!! The blue accents definitely rock, and presumably will prevent you from accidentally cutting yourself on the pan.

One question, though, if you don't mind. What is the button layout, i.e. what Twin Stick buttons map to what Saturn pad buttons?

Yeah, that's what I was wondering......among many other things, as you see.

I took pics of every step on the construction, I will try to post them a bit later.

They do indeed work and pretty good if a do say so.

The layout is:

Left stick: Up/Down/Left/Right is normal.

Front Trigger is L (left-side weapon)
Top Trigger is R (left dash)

Right stick: X for left, Z for right, Y for up, B for down.
Front Trigger is A (right-side weapon)
Top Trigger is (right side dash)

Black Button is start

The full parts list:

Cake pan
Rubber made bin lid (cut for bottom)
2x NES Quickshot Joysticks
Genesis case (use to create shelfs for quickshots)
Performance 8 Button Pad for Saturn
Cat5 Cable (Sheaths provide blue accents)
Screws for assembly

The funny thing is I intended the blue accents to just help me avaiod cutting myself on the cake pan while handling it. As time went on I grew to like em.

It took me 5 days or about 10 hours to make.

This is excellent! I was just looking to make some twin sticks the other day and came across the lovely NES quickshot on ebay. It seems like a good fit. Obviously you must be very proud of your work, but I was wondering if you are completely satisfied with your choice of sticks and how they operate. I doubt I'll be using a cake pan, but I hope to be doing something like this very soon for an Xbox controller. If you've got any more pics or details of the process I'd love to see them

The sticks work great.

They only cost about $25 to make so I am more than jazzed with how well they work.

If you are looking to make a inexpensive pair of sticks the quickshot is a perfect stick to use.
Just be aware that 2o year old sticks have 20 year old screw that strip very easily!

The quickshot uses a spring assembly instead of micro switches for all buttons and for the joystick movements. When a piece of plastic from a button or a stick movement hits the spring it causes it to stretch, causing a little piece of metal to hit a magnet, triggering the desired action.

I also had to rewire one stick completely as the internal wires were shot!

The cake pan works out great because it can stand up to the torsion that it the basis of VO.

I used two trays made from a sega Genesis (Mega Drive) game case. The screws go through the top of the cake pan and around the quickshot and finally screw into the tray.

As you can see my soldering skills are very very very poor. A true testament to how easy this actual build is!

I will post all my pics later in the week.

Awesome! This gives me a lot of hope, because I have no experience with this sort of thing. But for Virtual On, its worth it to learn!

Someone else did custom Twin Sticks using the NES Quickshot controllers:

That seems a bit on the unpractical side. Seeing as though one good electric shock will probably cause it to malfunction.

How so? It's not like he's going to be playing in an electrical storm. I'd say the odds of it malfunctioning are close to unpossible.

Hey, how's that pantastic controller holding up?

I just picked up some quickshots off of ebay, so I'll be endeavoring to make a controller with the madcats stick soon.

Actually I recently moved into a house (YAY!) and have no idea where they are...

I know I brought them though!

They were still working great as of December.

Thanks for the thanks!

In response (to the two year old) post about electrical shock, the wires are well shielded plus as an extra precaution, all the wires were pulled through the original Saturn pad plastic housing. This will also help if I every need to repair things.

So to wire the quickshot to a controller, do I just take one ground from the quickshot and hook it to the common ground on my controller?
