I think it's funny how amazingly detailed and accurate some aspects of the machine are and other aspects are just completely wrong. Pretty cool that it got some screen time though.

I've seen still images of this scene before when looking up pics, how recent is this anime?

It's actually almost two years old by now. I watched it during its airing, it's not a particularly interesting series in terms of its premise but the animation quality is pretty high because it's KyoAni. This particular episode is mostly a character developing episode which I guess makes it one of the better episodes.
