Dordray Thread

Greetings and salutations, I noticed that there wasn't a thread dedicated to Dordray, or any character other than Ajim really, and thought I would start one.

So let us discuss various tips and tactics for the big green machine, being a beginner myself I will probably be asking more questions than answering

Let me get the ball rolling with some questions for the more seasoned players.
How do I go about using the Flamethrower and Rush attacks effictively?
Given it's limited range and having to be still to use it makes the flamethrower a bit hard to use, especially given the speed of the game.
And it seems the rushes might only be useful for those of us lucky enough to have twin sticks, given that curving is a must to be able to hit anyone and curving on the X360 controller seems a little clunky.

As an observer to Dordray players, flamethrowers are preaimed like how Raiden players would use their lasers. Curve airdash into cancel or just rotate. Curve to orientate the direction opponent would run into. cRTRW can be cancelled if something miss.

-Know what the flames can protect u from: Someone would correct me if Im wrong but flamethrowers neutralise anything from Angelan's dragons to Specineff's LWRT to Raiden's lasers. The only thing which it doesnt shield against is Specineff's Slide Attack and bombs still inflict damage. Also when RWRT is active, Dordray's V-armor (@100%) resistance lvl is at its peak as it can reflect even forward dash attacks from Temjin at point blank.

LW aka Drill Rush:

- Know the differences of properties for each version. Grounddash, Slidedash, Airdash. Grounddash travels the slowest out of all of them, but it makes it easier to manuever. Slidedash is the fastest, its low form could duck under most attacks making it the perfect escape tool. Airdash is the most dangerous out of them all. Not as fast as slidedash but still ridiculously fast, its curve is steep making it superb for locking down stationary targets as u can circle around the opponent upto 3-4 times. Airdash is useful for punishing recovery times as usually it goes over low blocks and still reach your target as u make the turn. LW Drill rush can shield u against some projectiles but not against heavy attacks like lasers, shockwaves etc.

CW aka CD rush:

-CD rush is less used because its not shielded like Drill rush and its hitbox is as small as its enlarged CD only. Its properties vary similarly like Drill Rush. People use the airdash version at close range because the curve is so steep it will cut across anything beside it. However it is much slower than Drill Rush.

In general about rushes, use it as an attack and manuever tool. The latter is good for placing Dordray underneath airdashes when u can deliberately make a stop by running into an obstacle. Its also wise to runaway in matchups where theirs weapons cannot inflict direct damage.

Aniking should be able to teach you more.

Last time you were at my crib, I noticed you like to use his side dash attack. It's not as useful as you might think, the balls are too slow to do any good.

Keep practicing withthe flamethrower, try throwing his drill out first and anticipating your opponent's flight path. Don't forget, the crouching version (cRWRT) goes about 100m farther.

And like Dave said, Aniking can really teach you about Dordray, he's the only player I've seen get his throw off so consisently.

I know that his forward and diagonal dash attacks are good, come out fast and do good damage, but with a long range character like Dodoray it seems tough to know when to use them exactly, again I guess with practice and learning that there dash vectoring would help.

Does anyone have info on which projectiles his cRW destroys with it's explosion? I assume it's mainly just RW attacks.

The explosion of cRW blocks almost everything.


I pretty much never use RTRW variation (high flame). I don't see the use of it nor seen anyone good ever using it in tournament. It's range is short, can miss upclose, and uncancelable. cRTRW is the best version of the flame. The flame is not that hard to hit an opponent with if you can recognize player's tendency. ex. hiding behind obstacles, landing from long recovery air attack, etc

Map rotation to LB/RB instead of right stick. It helps a lot.

i wrote that strategy guide a long time ago, based on ver 5.2 i think-- don't put much stock in it, i've learned a lot and much has changed.

Here's what i realized: Dordray has a lot of problems. the list of attacks you should NEVER use is longer than the list of good ones. but i still like Dordray.

here's the best stuff:
Crouch flamethrower.
Crouch Fwd-dash and Crouch Fwd-diag dash Fireballs.
Fwd-dash and Fwd-diag dash Drill. Crouch is better in some cases.
Drill Rush and Air Drill Rush (done as low as possible)
Crouch CW (Crouch Freezing rings) cancelled into a dash. This is important, make it a habit.

other stuff to throw in there:
Crouch RW exploding fireballs
Claw (LTRW)
Flaming Ring (LTCW, CrLTCW, or dash CW)
Drill variations (LT, Crouch, RW in rare cases)
CC attacks and dash CC

i would focus on this stuff and try to avoid the rest.

strategy:
1. when standing, you can go for a big attack or spam them.
-- Big attacks are CrRTRW and Drill Rush. The rush is very risky, use it when you're sure.
-- Spam is the Claw (LTRW), CrCW (cancelled), CrRW, crLW, LTLW, LTCW, etc. Try to get quick with spitting these out and mix them up.
2. when dashing, mix up your dashes, don't attack every time, and watch out for your chances to use Fireballs, Drill, or Drill Rush. Changing direction during dashes (Watari-dashing) is essential and Curve Dashing is heavily used by the experts.
A personal example:
Right-Fwd diag dash, giving evasion and the option to use LW or CrRW. If no good opportunity for attack, either stop and do standing attacks, or Watari-turn hard Left, giving option for CrRW if i want to be defensive or to Watari-turn Fwd and do a Drill Rush.

lastly, practice combos off of CrCW cancelled into a dash. You are going to fire just a couple rings, and then dash off, having the 2nd attack ready if the rings hit and freeze. Best ones to do after you freeze them are CrRTRW flamethrower, fwd-dash LW drill rush, diag-fwd dash LW (best if they are far away), fwd-dash CC CW (huge style points!)

Dodoray side dash RW is actually an extremely powerful and underused move. A couple very advanced players focus on it, but most advanced Dodoray players never use it at all.
