VirtualOn.org - http://www.virtualon.org

Post by Schooly D »

So, a long time ago these used to be this site called VirtualOn.net. A long long time ago there was this site called SydVOC, but that's ancient lore now.

Anyway, VirtualOn.net was sort of the HQ for the international VO community. It was kind of light on content, but it did host a forum and a chat room. Then it exploded for some reason.

So, because I'd like to see a solid web resource for English-speaking VO players, I started developing VirtualOn.org. My goal for VO.org is to have it be a comprehensive compendium of everything VO-related. I want information on all the games, all the VRs, articles from contributing writers in the form of rants, strategies, projects, etc., videos, artwork, whatever. This site (oratan.com) has fostered a great community, but I think it's a bit lacking in terms of solid, organized content, which is something I hope to bring to the table with VO.org.

Even though the site is nowhere near finished yet, it's to a point where I think I can at least release it to the public:

http://www.virtualon.org/

One of the driving forces behind this website I hope will be submitted content from members of the community. Currently, the only one who has access to submit articles is me, but I would love to import the projects and guides that people here have created. But with the exceptions of commonlogik's Beginner's Guide and MentholMoose's DC->360 Twin Sticks mod, I don't want to lift anything without the author's permission. So,

If you have written anything for this forum (project, strategy, VR guide, anything), please let me know if I have your permission to incorporate it into VO.org, like this: http://www.virtualon.org/community/projects.php?id=7

Thanks!

P.S. Look, I know a lot of you don't want to admit your nerdiness, but your friends aren't going to laugh at you if you come and idle in our chat room.

The labor of love continues!

Updates:

- Some slight aesthetic alterations -- I thought the horizontal menu bar was getting a bit too crowded

- Image functionality is now working! You can see it in action here: http://virtualon.org/voot/images.php (for now it's only on the VOOT section but setting it up for the other games is just a matter of copy/pasting). Next step is to implement a thumbnailing function so the user doesn't have to download the full version of every image in the gallery when he opens it. [update: thumbnailing ability is now complete! but the images that were there previously have been nuked... I'll start re-uploading them when I get back to my desktop]

- Tournament functionality is now working! You can see it in action here: http://virtualon.org/community/tournaments.php. For now it's only for finished tournaments, but maybe in the future it can be expanded to accommodate upcoming tournaments as well.

- Video functionality is now working! Although an interface for browsing videos hasn't been coded up yet, the uploading and displaying system is working like a charm!

- Added a new section: resources! Designed to be factual information about a game that can't really be classified as strategy. The lone article populating the VOOT resources for now can be seen here: http://virtualon.org/voot/resources.php

To-do list:
- video browsing interface
- GET MORE PEOPLE TO GIVE ME PERMISSION TO IMPORT THEIR PROJECTS AND STUFF
